PAS 55 - what makes TWPL different? |
|
Question: What is PAS 55?
Answer: PAS 55 is the British Standards Institution's "Publicly Available Specification" for the optimised management of physical assets and infrastructure - it provides clear definitions and a 21-point requirements specification for joined-up, optimised and whole-life asset management systems.
Question: Why do we need PAS 55?
Answer: Organisations that have adopted such a rigorous, joined-up and optimised approach have consistently delivered significant bottom-line cost and performance/service improvements. PAS 55 also provides clear evidence of sustainable good governance to customers, investors, regulators and other stakeholders.
Question: Why do leading edge organisations choose TWPL to conduct their Asset Management reviews and PAS 55 certification?
Answer: Because we take them further than just the 'tick in the box'. We help to develop and implement a prioritised roadmap of short-term and long-term improvement programmes, directly in line with business objectives and filtered for value, urgency, resource constraints, interdependencies and local cultural factors. With every consultant offering at least 20 years' personal, first-hand management experience in 'making it happen', we provide pragmatic and sustainable solutions.

Capabilities
The Woodhouse Partnership's core competency is in the field of asset management and its customised, integrated implementation in complex industrial settings. We employ staff that not only have world-leading, first-hand implementation experience, but are also on the front line of best practice and standards development. Our personnel led and chaired the original British Standards Institution (BSI) and Institute of Asset Management (IAM) project that created PAS 55 and currently chair IAM initiatives for developing cross-industry assessment methods and for PAS 55 review and update. Although the PAS 55 standard has only recently emerged, we have been undertaking systematic assessments against this standard and other business excellence models in the UK, Europe, Africa, the Americas and Far East over the last 10 years.
TWPL personnel at the heart of PAS 55 and other leading edge developments
John Woodhouse, Managing Director of TWPL, is also Chairman of the Development & Standards Committee in the Institute of Asset Management. He was Chairman of the PAS 55 development project and also for the IAM Asset Management Competencies Project. Tom Brown, David Gooda, Peter Jay and other Principal Consultants are also members of the Review Panels and closely participate in other IAM projects.

PAS 55 Assessment and Certification
The TWPL Certification is a formal recognition that an organisation's integrated life-cycle asset management system is adequate and effective, in line with PAS 55. This milestone provides recognised credibility in good practice and corporate governance, and a robust platform for developing further improvements.
The assessment covers all 21 points of the PAS 55 requirements, can be applied across the whole organisation or to specific asset or business units, and characterises the maturity of the organisation on a 5-level scale, ranging from 'Innocence' to 'Excellence'. Unlike other assessments, however, we don't stop there – we also gauge the scope, value and rate of improvement that is possible in each area, so that recommendations can be developed into a cohesive, logical and prioritised plan.

Scottish Power, UK
"There are many consultancy companies who profess to understand asset management, but few who convince me that their experience could really make a difference. After careful consideration we chose The Woodhouse Partnership - they were very clear on the inputs needed and the outputs we would get. They were also prepared to "tell it as they found it" and work with us to plan the way forward. The resulting report was very clear, identified strengths, weaknesses and recommended actions to be taken. The jointly created Roadmap gave a clear picture of what had to be done and was translated into individual objectives for the team.
We finally had a joined-up picture and this helped align staff to a common goal. Three years on, over 80% of the recommendations are already implemented and we are working on the remainder in preparation for the next iteration - including PAS 55 accreditation."

Enbridge Gas Distribution, Canada
"We selected TWPL to create a plan for Enbridge Gas Distribution (EGD) to further develop its asset management capabilities. We selected TWPL because we were impressed by their expertise in addressing both the technical, people and financial issues related to infrastructure asset management. The TWPL team successfully identified EGD's asset management strengths and gaps by completing a series of Interactive Assessment interviews and focus groups. They then ran a number of Roadmapping workshops to develop a realistic, coordinated way forward. The resulting plan will now be fully executed at EGD."
